Taroni, Italy’s oldest silk mill, presents a unique collection of upholstered chairs that explores the expressive potential of silk beyond its traditional applications.

The project is the latest initiative developed by Taroni Laboratorio, the company’s special research platform dedicated to investigating the expressive possibilities of silk across the fields of art and design. Bringing together textile excellence and furniture craftsmanship, the collection translates Taroni’s complete Double Duchess colour card into a series of seating pieces that celebrate the material’s exceptional relationship with light, colour and form.

At the centre of the collection is the Egadi 01 dining chair, designed by Rodolfo Dordoni for Very Wood. Defined by its elegant proportions, solid wood construction and understated aesthetic, the chair provides the ideal framework for showcasing the richness and versatility of silk. Rather than acting as a decorative covering, the fabric becomes the defining element of each piece, revealing its depth through volume and three-dimensionality.

Each chair is upholstered in a different shade from Taroni’s Double Duchess palette, transforming the colour card into a physical landscape of colour. Through this process, silk moves beyond the textile sample to become an architectural and spatial presence. The collection highlights the fabric’s extraordinary ability to absorb, reflect and modulate light, allowing colours to evolve continuously according to perspective and changing environmental conditions.

The project stems from a broader investigation into the inherent qualities of silk and the ways in which these can be experienced in everyday settings. Long associated with Haute Couture, silk is reinterpreted here through a domestic lens, demonstrating its suitability for contemporary interiors while preserving the sensory qualities that have made it one of the world’s most prized materials.

Through Taroni Laboratorio, the company continues to expand the boundaries of silk beyond the textile sector, fostering collaborations and experimental projects that open new dialogues between material innovation, craftsmanship and contemporary design. This collection represents a further step in that ongoing exploration, demonstrating how silk can become not only a surface, but an active element in shaping objects, spaces and experiences.
